A distraught Utah teen allegedly stabbed a girl he had just met on Tinder before accidentally stabbing an elderly woman on Thursday, officials said.
Kane Thomas Fairbank, 18, is said to have assaulted the girl, also 18, after luring her to Mueller Park outside the town of Bountiful. The two had met through the dating app just days before, according to a press release from the Davis County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said the couple, who had met in person before, were spending several hours together at the park when he suddenly “forced her into his vehicle” around 6:30 p.m., according to a likely statement from The Salt Lake Tribune.
According to the document, Fairbank allegedly stabbed the girl multiple times with “a fixed blade nearly a foot long.”
The girl was able to fight back and locate witnesses who “helped create a barrier between Fairbank and the victim,” police officers said.
Fortunately, among the witnesses were two nurses and a paramedic who assisted the victims while they waited for emergency services to arrive.
The teenager suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital in critical condition, the Tribune reported.
Fairbank fled the scene and drove to a gas station in Bountiful, where he abandoned the vehicle, police officers said.
He also threw the girl’s phone “in an area he believed would not be found” before continuing his violent killing spree, arrest documents show.
Fairbank approached a 64-year-old woman in another Bountiful neighborhood and allegedly stabbed her multiple times, police said. The woman was critically injured.
The second victim fought off her attacker, who was also supported by witnesses, as he fled the scene.
Police officers said a “good Samaritan” who spotted him nearby held him until he was taken into police custody.
Both victims are now in stable condition while recovering at local hospitals.
Fairbanks told investigators the stabbing was premeditated and that he had planned further attacks, police officers said.
He told cops he intended to murder the first victim since he began interacting with her on Tinder.
Investigators wrote that he planned to live out of his car and continue killing those “he thought were vulnerable,” which he cited as motivation for stabbing the elderly woman.
The teenager “spoke extensively about killing his parents and siblings with a pickaxe,” according to the probable cause statement, and told detectives that if released, he would continue to kill those he had met on social media.
Fairbank is being held in the Davis County Jail. He faces two counts of attempted murder, two counts of obstruction of justice and one count of aggravated kidnapping.
He is being held without bail, according to prison records.
