US Weekly Vinyl Album Sales Break Modern-Era Records – Billboard

US weekly vinyl album sales hit a modern-day record high, with 2.11 million vinyl albums sold in the week ending December 23, according to MRC Data. This was the biggest single week of sales for vinyl albums since MRC Data began tracking music sales in 1991.

This is the first time that weekly vinyl album sales exceed 2 million copies in the MRC Data era. The highest level in the previous week, since 1991, to A year ago, when 1.84 million vinyl LPs were sold in the week ending December 24, 2020.

LP vinyl sales jumped for the week ending December 23 – by 45% from the previous week (1.46 million) – driven by holiday shopping leading up to Christmas Day on December 25th.

The best-selling vinyl album for the week ending December 23 is Adele‘S 30, with 59,000 copies sold. It ranks at number 1 on Billboardsweekly Album Vinyl rankings for the fifth consecutive week (chart January 1, 2022). 30 has sold 293,000 copies on vinyl in the US and is the best-selling vinyl LP of 2021.

Half of the albums sold were vinyl LPs: In total for the week ending December 23, vinyl album sales accounted for 50% of all album sales in the US (2.11 million out of 4.23 million). The second figure includes all physical album sales (CDs, vinyls, cassettes, etc.) along with digital album sales. Vinyl album sales account for 57% of the total materialistic album sold for the week (2.11 million out of 3.72 million).

Weekly Vinyl LP Sales Outperform CD Sales: And, by the 23rd week of 2021, weekly vinyl LP sales have exceeded CD album sales – 2.11 million vinyl LPs versus 1.58 million CDs. Since 1991, vinyl LPs have outsold CDs in just 28 weeks: five weeks in 2020 and 23 weeks – so far – in 2021. (One more week to go in the 2021 track year, which ends on Feb. December 30)
