US Congressman Donald McEachin has died of cancer at the age of 61

Rep. Donald McEachin, a Virginia Democrat, has died of colon cancer at the age of 61, his chief of staff said on Monday.

“We are all devastated by the death of our boss and friend, Congressman Donald McEachin. For years we’ve watched bravely as he battled and triumphed over the side effects of his 2013 colon cancer. Tonight he lost that fight and the people of Virginia’s fourth congressional district lost a hero who always, always fought for them and put them first,” Tara Rountree, McEachin’s chief of staff, said in a statement.

“Until a new representative is elected, our office will remain open and continue to serve our constituents. The family is asking for privacy at this time. The agreements will be announced in the next few days,” added Rountree.

Since 2017, McEachin has represented the fourth congressional district of the Commonwealth of Virginia, which stretches east from the capital, Richmond, toward Chesapeake.

On November 8, MeEachin defeated Republican Leon Benjamin in his race for re-election to Congress.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) remembered his fellow congressman and friend as a “fighter” focused on “social and environmental justice” in a tweet Monday night.

“Don McEachin was a fighter to the end. Despite battling cancer and facing other court cases over the past several years, he never lost his focus on social and environmental justice,” Warner said.

“He was a great advocate…always willing to stand up and fight for communities that have been left behind and are passionate about climate justice. We will miss him terribly in Congress. My deepest condolences to his family, staff and loved ones. Rest in peace and strength Don,” Jayapal added in her tweet.

Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) also tweeted his reminiscences of McEachin on Monday night, when he called the Virginia congressman a “pioneer” who will be “remembered.”
