United States men’s soccer team players credit Berhalter for the first leg | WSAU News / Talk 550 AM · 99.9 FM

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The leadership of United States men’s team head coach Gregg Berhalter’s has been crucial in getting the team into place for next year’s World Cup after a heartbreaking failure to make it to the tournament. 2018, the players said on Thursday.

A young American team beat Mexico to win the CONCACAF Nations League in June and the Gold Cup in August before knocking out opponents again in World Cup qualifiers last month.

Canada tops the CONCACAF World Cup standings with 16 points, followed by the United States with 15. Mexico and Panama both have 14 points.

The top three teams in a pool of eight will automatically qualify for Qatar 2022 with the fourth-placed team going into an intercontinental playoff for another spot.

The players said the team responded to Berhalter’s vision and leadership.

“Everybody is on the same page now,” defender Auston Trusty told reporters ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Southern California.

“Everybody knows what Gregg wants, everyone knows how the team wants to play and where the players have to be.

“You see it all coming together. It is really increasing. “

Kevin Paredes, who likes Trusty as a defender who will have his first game on Saturday, said he has learned a lot from Berhalter.

“He understands my strengths and weaknesses,” he said.

“We talked about the position that suits me best. I tried the full-back, tried the winger, tried the centre-back.

“I’m just learning and growing and we’re still trying to figure out where I can continue to play for the US.”
