Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the US Congress in person on Wednesday

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend a joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday night – the war leader’s first venture outside his country since February’s Russian invasion.

The planned visit was first reported by Punchbowl News.

A source familiar with the plans told the Post that the visit has not been confirmed and is dependent on Zelenskyy’s security situation.

Zelensky reportedly refused to evacuate to the United States in the early days of the war, allegedly telling American intelligence at the time, “I need ammunition, not a ride.”

The Ukrainian president will now get both and attend the joint session a week after the US announced it was preparing to deliver advanced air defense systems to Kyiv.

In a letter titled “Dear Colleague,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi encouraged members to attend Wednesday night’s session in person, without confirming the Ukrainian leader’s attendance.

“We are ending a very special session of the 117th Congress with legislation that brings both progress for the American people and support for our democracy,” she wrote. “Please be present on Wednesday evening for a very special focus on democracy.”

Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reported Tuesday that Ukrainian forces outside of Bakhmut Zelenskyy presented a signed blue and gold flag to US lawmakers during his recent visit to the front lines.

“[Defenders] handed over our flag with their signatures,” said Zelenskyy.

“We have a difficult situation, the enemy is increasing its numbers. Our boys are bolder and we need stronger weapons,” he added. “We will convey the boys’ words of thanks to Congress and the US President for their support.”
