Ukrainian musician Andriy Khlyvnyuk has joined the military to fight against the Russian invasion of his country.
The 42-year-old musician, who is part of the band Boombox, announced his move on social media earlier this week.
Accordingly euronews, Khlyvnyuk took his children to their grandmother’s house and returned to fight the war against Russia.
“I’m taking my kids to a safe house, to Grandma’s. And then I will return to follow government orders and if necessary I will take my gun and fight for my country,” he told the outlet.
The singer, who has more than 100 million views on YouTube, also said that “musicians are peacemakers.” He added: “Now [is] not [the] Time to play guitar. It’s time to take up the guns.”
Since announcing his decision, Khlyvnyuk has been posting videos on social media to update his fans about the situation in Ukraine.
He was also seen in a video singing a song outside a church to lift the spirits of those directly affected by this conflict.
On Sunday (February 27), Vladimir Putin put Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on high alert, citing aggressive statements by NATO leaders and economic sanctions against Moscow.
In the latest update, a series of large explosions could be heard in Kyiv on Wednesday (March 2) as Russia continues its bombing of cities across Ukraine.
This comes as Russian troops appear to have taken “complete control” of Kherson, the first major city captured during Putin’s war.
