Ukrainian forces filmed a video shooting a dead, wounded Russian soldier

Gruesome video footage emerged Wednesday of Ukrainian forces shooting and killing a wounded Russian soldier on a road west of Kyiv.

Footage confirmed by the New York Times shows two bodies — apparently Russian soldiers — lying in the street in a pool of bright red blood.

The nearest soldier, his jacket pulled over his head, can be seen twitching and gasping for breath.

“He’s still alive,” says a man’s voice. “Film these looters. Look, he’s still alive. He’s gasping for air.”

A man to the right of the camera raises his rifle and fires two shots into the panting man’s torso.

The wounded Russian gasps again and is shot in the back a third time before stopping to move.

The camera then pans to the bodies of two other Russian soldiers lying dead in the street. One with an apparent head wound has his hands tied behind his back. The other appears to be wearing the blue-striped shirt of Russia’s elite airborne troops.

The Ukrainian unit is not identified in the video, but the scene depicted and the Ukrainian soldiers seen in the footage appear to be identical to those in a video released March 30.

In this video – shared by Ukraine’s UNIAN news service and which does not show the killing of wounded Russians – the unit is identified as the Georgian Legion, a foreign paramilitary unit fighting on the Ukrainian side.

Senior adviser to the President of Ukraine Oleksiy Arestovych said such actions are “absolutely unacceptable”.

“The Georgian Legion continues to help the Ukrainians to cleanse the Kyiv region of the ‘liberators’,” reads the video’s caption.

The Ukrainian government said last month it would launch an investigation into unverified videos allegedly showing Ukrainian forces shooting captured Russian soldiers in the legs.

The authenticity of this footage has yet to be independently verified.

“We are a European army and we do not mock our prisoners,” senior presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said at the time. “If this turns out to be real, this is totally unacceptable behavior.”
