Cold air masses flow from the north
Met Office forecaster Matthew Box told The Sun Online: “We have a cold air mass coming in from the north across the UK.
“There are showers behind them and they are bringing a mix of sleet and snow mainly to the east of the UK.
“Especially this morning we have temperatures around or below zero in many places.”
Mr Box said the wintry showers “are coming in from a north-easterly wind” coming in from the Arctic, affecting East Anglia, north-east England and north and east Scotland, among others.
A mix of snow, sleet and hail is expected to hit those parts – before temperatures drop further overnight.
Mr Box said: “It will remain cold and there will be the possibility of winter showers – they will be most common today and tomorrow.
“It’s going to be a cold night for Britain.
“We expect temperatures to drop to lows of -5C to -7C in areas of Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland tonight into Friday morning.
