One of Britain’s biggest energy providers has apologized for advising customers to cuddle their pets or challenge children to hula hoop competitions to stay warm without adding heat to their electricity and gas bills. Burning increases in winter this year.
The Financial Times reported that proposals from Ovo Energy are on the list of 10 effective cost-effective ways to save on heating costs. The listing has sparked outrage from politicians and households whose incomes are being squeezed by rising energy prices, which are fueling record inflation across Europe and fueled by supply of natural gas is scarce.
Lawmaker Darren Jones, a Labor lawmaker on the House of Commons Business Select Committee, called Ovo’s advice “insulting”.
“I’m not sure who signed off on a marketing campaign telling people to wear overalls and eat porridge instead of turning on the heater if you can’t afford it,” he said on Twitter.
The company told the FT: “We understand how difficult the situation will be for many of our customers this year. “We are working hard to find meaningful solutions as we approach this energy crisis, and we have found that the content of this blog is underrated and unhelpful. We are very embarrassed and sincerely apologize.”
