Two people fall down an elevator shaft in the Bronx. Target: police officers
Two people, including a 16-year-old boy, fell three floors down an elevator shaft at a target in the Bronx Thursday morning, officials said.
A 911 caller reported that the teen and a 20-year-old man fell into the manhole at around 11 a.m. at 700 Exterior St. — sparking a massive emergency response, officials said.
The FDNY determined the teenager had fallen onto the elevator car, but the older man had fallen onto the bottom of the shaft, Deputy Assistant Superintendent John Sarrocco said at a news conference.
“The first victim was removed immediately,” Sarrocco said.
“The second victim was a bit more difficult to operate on. He was under the elevator.”
The 20-year-old was “in the pit” 10 to 15 feet below the elevator, so the FDNY set up a rope system to pull him up, the official said.
Both victims were taken to hospitals to be treated for their injuries.
The FDNY said it found a 16-year-old and a 20-year-old injured.
According to the FDNY, the teenager fell onto the elevator car and the older man onto the bottom of the shaft.
The man, who was conscious, was rescued within an hour and taken to hospital in critical condition, officials said.
The 16-year-old was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition, according to police.
How the two fell into the shaft is unclear, the police said. They are believed to have fallen three stories.
Assistant Deputy Chief of Police John Sarrocco said the first victim was easy to reach.
The FDNY had to use a rope system to pull the 20-year-old up because he was 10 to 15 feet below the elevator, Sarrocco said.
Inspectors from the municipal building authority are on their way to the site, a city spokesman said. Target didn’t immediately respond to a call asking for comment.
