Former President Donald Trump gave Rep. Lee Zeldin his “full and unreserved endorsement” on Sunday, praising Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Republican challenger as “strong on the frontier, crime, our great military and vets.”
“I have observed and known Congressman Lee Zeldin for many years. He is a great and brilliant attorney who was a must for others in Congress when they faced a complex legal issue that was holding up the legislature,” the 45th Commander-in-Chief wrote on social media platform Truth on Sunday.
“Strong on the frontier, crime, our great military and vets (like few others!), Lee fought hard to protect our 2nd Amendment and made it through. Lee Zeldin is a WINNER who got things done. He’s going to be a GREAT governor of New York and has my complete and unreserved approval. GOOD LUCK LEE!” said Trump.
With less than a month to go before the Nov. 8 election, the Long Island Republican has smashed Hochul’s double-digit lead in this summer’s polls and turned the race into a toss-up.
Hochul now has a 5.3 percentage point lead over Zeldin, according to an average of RealClear Politics polls since late September.
Zeldin hammered Hochul on bail reform and rising crime in New York during the election campaign.
Trump, who remained neutral during the state’s Republican gubernatorial primary on June 28, has since thrown support behind Zeldin.
The former president gave the Zeldin campaign a $1.5 million boost at a fundraiser in New Jersey last month.
He told donors that Zeldin helped him overcome “number one impeachment scam and number two impeachment scam and many scams,” citing his unsuccessful efforts to overturn the 2020 election results that the Suffolk Country congressman backed .
“I had these madmen against me. He was one of those great voices,” Trump said, The Post reported, at the Long Branch fundraiser.
