JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) – The driver of the pickup truck in a fiery interstate crash that killed four people in 2019 will be sentenced on Monday.

A judge granted a request to live stream the sentencing. Victim impact statements will be streamed online, based on victim consent. Watch it live on FOX31 NOW in the player above.

Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 25 years old, driving an 18-wheeler when he crashed into more than two dozen stopped vehicles and four semi-structures on I-70 in Lakewood.

A jury found Aguilera-Mederos committed 27 crimes in October:

  • Murder by vehicle: 4 times
  • Vehicle Attack: 2 turns
  • Attack on the first level – extreme indifference: 6 times
  • Attempting to commit a crime in the first degree: 10 crimes
  • Reckless driving: 1 turn
  • Careless driving causes death: 4 counts

He was not found guilty of 15 counts of attempting to commit an assault in the first degree.

Aguilera-Moderos was driving a semi-trailer laden with lumber. Prosecutors say he barrel headed east down the interstate from the mountains at speeds up to 85 miles per hour. Sometimes his truck changed direction, forcing other drivers to cross the road.

A huge fireball erupted after Aguileras-Mederos crashed into dozens of cars in reverse on the highway because of a previous collision.

Aquilaras-Mederos believes the truck’s brakes failed and he lost control.

Sentencing begins at 1:30 p.m. MDT. Check back with this story for the latest updates from the court.
