Trevon Murphy charged in allegedly fatal stabbing of homeless person in New York

The suspect, who was charged in a series of stabbings that killed a homeless man in New York City and injured two others, will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial, a judge ruled Tuesday.

The trial was ordered by Manhattan Superior Court Justice Diane Kiesel at the request of defense attorneys following Trevon Murphy’s charges of murder, attempted murder and assault in connection with two of the attacks, prosecutors said.

Murphy, 40, is accused of stabbing three homeless people, one fatally, during a week-long rampage last month in which he allegedly stabbed victims in their stomachs while they slept.

According to a criminal complaint, he first struck around 3 a.m. on July 5, stabbing a 34-year-old man who was sleeping on a bench in Hudson River Park before fleeing down the West Side Highway. The victim died shortly afterwards in a hospital.

The next attack occurred on July 8, when a 59-year-old man was stabbed while he slept on a bench near the corner of Madison Avenue and East 49th Street, prosecutors said.

Murphy is also suspected of stabbing a third homeless man who was sleeping in a basketball court at the Stanley Isaacs Playground near East 95th Street and FDR Drive on July 11, the complaint said. But a grand jury has yet to indict him in connection with the third attack, the prosecutor’s office said.

Prosecutors allege that Murphy faced police and horrified that he chose to stab victims in the lower abdomen as his “choice of stabbing.”

He allegedly told authorities he used a serrated blade to “pull out bits of intestine with it,” prosecutors claimed.

Murphy – who was also arrested for hitting his roommate at a homeless shelter in April – has been in jail since his July 15 arrest.

He has not submitted a plea.

Trevon Murphy is said to have attacked three homeless people while they were sleeping, killing one.

“These chilling attacks were perpetrated against some of our most vulnerable community members,” District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement. “It’s incredibly tragic that someone would lose their life just because they didn’t have the security that a roof over their heads brings.”

“No one should be subjected to violence when going through the extraordinarily painful and difficult experience of being homeless and we will seek full accountability and justice in this case,” the statement continued.
