Travis Scott Debuts New Track At The BBMAs In First TV Appearance Since The Astroworld Tragedy

Travis Scott unveiled his new single “Mafia” during an appearance at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.

The 31-year-old rapper made his first television appearance on Sunday (May 15) since last November’s Astroworld tragedy.

Last week, P Diddy announced the “great news” on his Instagram account that Scott would be performing at the upcoming BBMAs.

“I have great news. That just arrived,” said the 52-year-old rapper, whose real name is Sean Combs, adding, “For this Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, I made a request, I made a demand. I said, ‘My brother Travis Scott has to perform.’ Diddy is hosting the show – I’m executive producer – he has to perform.”

“And NBC said ‘yes.’ So it starts on Sunday. Travis Scott will perform.”

In addition to Scott, controversial singer Morgan Wallen and other top artists such as Megan Thee Stallion, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silk Sonic, Ed Sheeran, Mary J Blige and Florence and the Machine also performed during the Las Vegas ceremony.

Scott performed his first live public show to a sold-out crowd at Miami’s E11EVEN nightclub last week – six months after the incident at his Astroworld music festival in Houston, Texas, that left 10 dead and injured dozens more.

Before that, he appeared at a handful of private events, including a pre-Oscars house party in March and a brief set during a Coachella after-party in April.

The Astroworld tragedy involved a deadly crowd on November 5, 2021 with victims ranging in age from nine to 27.

About 300 people were injured and treated at Six Flags Park in Houston, where Scott was headlining Astroworld, while 25 had to be taken to hospitals.

Scott is currently a defendant in more than 380 lawsuits filed by Astroworld victims and attendees seeking billions in damages from him, festival organizer Live Nation, Apple and others.

The prosecution alleges that the Houston Music Festival was poorly planned and staged and that the crowds during Scott’s performance were avoidable. Scott and the other defendants have denied any wrongdoing.
