Travel issues with flights and gas prices continue on July 4th

WASHINGTON — The holiday weekend sees more travel woes with numerous flight cancellations and delays as air travel returns to pre-pandemic levels.

Meanwhile, a new war of words about high gas prices has broken out between the White House and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

And now the White House is shooting back.

Flight problems are hitting airports hard this bank holiday weekend. The three most affected airports are Hartsfield, Jackson in Atlanta, Newark in New Jersey and JFK in New York.

“My flight was canceled but I didn’t find out until I got to the gate,” said one customer.

On Friday alone, the Transportation Security Administration screened nearly 2.5 million people, a record high since the pandemic began.

Since then, thousands of flights have been canceled and many more delayed.

“I spent $656 on a ticket. And now I’m still trying to find a way home,” said one traveler.

Bad weather along with increased travel demand and ongoing pandemic airline staffing shortages are contributing to the problems across the country.

“We see an overburdened airline industry. And it doesn’t help that the FAA is also overworked,” said Henry Harteveldt, travel industry analyst.

Roads are also congested on the holiday, AAA said, a record 42 million travelers took to the streets.

“Because when I checked the plane prices, they were how ridiculous,” said one driver.

In Washington, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby shot back at Amazon’s Bezos. He criticized President Biden’s call for oil companies to lower prices at the pump. Bezos said the government misdirects or misunderstands fundamental market dynamics.

“He says exactly what he thinks in a way that anyone can understand. So I think we obviously take a lot of offense at the idea that this is kind of a misdirection,” Kirby said.

Kirby instead touted Biden’s efforts to cut gas prices, including trying to cap the price of Russian oil.

The national median gas price fell to $4.81 from last month’s record high of $5 a gallon.
