ANTONIO CONTE says Eric Dier can become ‘one of the best centre-backs in the world’.
Replaced Italian manager fired Nuno Espirito Santo in November, and has come up with his favorite five-back formation, with three centre-backs.
Dier, 27 years old, participated between the three central defenders, and has clearly impressed his new boss.
“The position suits him perfectly,” Conte said. Eric Dier could become one of the best players in the world in that position.
“For sure he needs to work and continue to improve and understand the movement of the defence.
“He has to lead more, because in that position you have to talk a lot because you have to be in the middle, in the back where you can see everything.
“He has great space to improve but we are talking about a really good player, physically strong with good character and good technique because he is a midfielder.
“This role suits him perfectly. He has to continue this way because he can become one of the best centre-backs.”
Striker Heung-min Son, 29 years old, has succeeded three goals since Conte’s arrival, and is another who impressed the fiery tactician.
“We are talking about a really world-class player,” Conte said.
“I met him before I became Tottenham manager, but only on TV. He impressed me a lot.
“But when you have the ability to train him and become his coach, you can see really the quality of this player.
“It’s great because he has the quality to run, [adds] intensity and resilience also.
“I think Sonny is a top player. Not a good player – a top player.
“Certainly I try to improve him, to help him, but we are talking about a player who is already at an important level.
“He has to carry on this way and have this anger, this desire, because we need players with ambition.
“If you’re ambitious, it means you’re never satisfied with your performance.
“You always want more, more, more and we need these players to improve Tottenham’s level. Sonny is one of these players.”
