Toronto ad for basement beds charging $420 each sparks outrage

This Canadian situation makes NYC look almost quaint.

A housing ad in Toronto sparked a backlash from miserable homebuyers by offering a somber glimpse of just how dire the city’s housing situation is at the moment.

“1 large fully furnished bedroom with 3 beds available. $420/bed. Available immediately,” says a viral Facebook advertisement for the cozy living facility in the basement.

The ad, posted by one Zahir Chowdhury on a buy-and-sell Facebook group, was picked up by locals News site BlogTO and has since sparked widespread outrage, although the original listing was ultimately deleted.

The post goes on to say that the “unit” has a separate entrance, presumably from the rest of the building, has laundry facilities, and is “close to” a supermarket, pharmacy, and a branch of Canadian restaurant chain Pizzanova. Also, utilities and Wi-Fi are “included” in the $420 price tag — but the situation is still illegal.

“The maximum number of people living in a habitable room must not exceed one person per nine square meters of habitable floor space,” it says Statutes of Toronto. Ontario’s capital currently holds the title of Canada most expensive citywhere the median rental price for a bedroom is $1,920.

Outrage over the poster reached a point where “they were literally being threatened,” Facebook user Maggie Mae Taylor – who took the screenshot of the ad that sparked its virality – told BlogTO. “People said they were going to attack the house.”

Other comments, Taylor admitted, were dark but “hilarious,” including one that read, “You can have bunk beds and rent to 6 people, the sky’s the limit.”

“More evidence Toronto rent is insane… This guy tried to rent a BED for $420???” Q107 Toronto labeled a link to the ad.

“It is extremely difficult to find a place at a reasonable price. It seems to be getting worse almost daily,” one netizen commented on the post, before it was deleted The Daily Mail reports. “A military barracks and jail cells have better quarters!” Toronto ad for basement beds charging $420 each sparks outrage
