MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The entire Memphis and Central South region is at risk of severe weather Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service on Friday morning upgraded a large portion of the area to “Medium Risk,” or 4 out of 5 on the scale. That means there are severe storms that have the potential to produce gusty winds, large hail, and powerful tornadoes.

The area south of the Tennessee-Mississippi border is at “Enhanced Risk”. See map on this story.

The NWS said the main reason for Friday’s upgrade was the increased tornado risk to the area.

The main concerns for these storms are gusts and tornadoes. There is also the possibility of heavy hail and heavy rainfall.

The NWS reported early Friday afternoon that the city broke a 103-year-old record for high temperatures on December 10. Friday’s high was 79, breaking the record 75 set in 1918.

The Memphis Department of Public Works urged residents to prepare for possible standing water in low-lying areas and asked residents to clear storm drains. City teams will be ready to respond.
