A local Conservative party is investigating a tweet from a local election candidate’s account that said 16-year-old girls have a “buttery, creamy” smell. The Independent can reveal.
A post on the Twitter account of Jonty Campbell, who has run for the Preston Conservatives several times, said: “Here’s the thing about girls under 22, they smell very different than girls under 28. Girls from 16 to, say, 23 have this buttery, creamy, slightly sweet smell that is incredibly magnetic.”
The tweet, which was broadcast on Saturday night, was met with loathing online after a journalist shared a screenshot of it.
Andrew Pratt, leader of the Preston Conservatives, said: “The recent tweet from [@CmdrJonty] is under investigation and further explanation will follow. This language and attitude towards women and girls is totally unacceptable.”
Mr Campbell has contested five Conservative seats on Preston Council in the most recent general election and by-election, most recently finishing second to Labor in the Ribbleton Borough last month.
On Sunday, the Preston Conservatives website listed him as an assistant campaign manager for the industry, but by Monday morning his listing was gone.
The Twitter account @CmdrJonty was also gone as of Monday morning.
The local branch of the Labor Party said Mr Campbell has said strange things in the past.
A Preston Labor spokesman said: “Anyone who knows Jonty takes everything he says with a very large pinch of salt, he has a history of bizarre political and apolitical social media posts – but this one is extremely creepy.
“We cannot understand why the local Tories choose him and others whose views are at the extremes of society.”
@CmdrJonty’s tweet was originally sent in response to an account that had tweeted about a man leaving his partner for a 22-year-old Ukrainian refugee.
Responding to Mr Campbell’s response, the account said: “We’re not dairy, we don’t spoil”.
