Top Gun: Maverick: Tom Cruise film named “Best Movie of the Year” in early reviews

The first reactions to Top Gun: Maverick have flown in – and they are extremely positive.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Tom Cruise introduced the film via video link Thursday (April 28) at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

It was then shown to a crowd of cinema operators and journalists, who ended up showering the film with great praise. Judging by the reaction, the sequel seems to be even better than the 1986 original, top gun.

The wrapis editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman wrote: “Just had the joyful experience of watching Top Gun: Maverick at #CinemaCon. Old School Moviemaking in the best sense – Tom Cruise, I tip my hat. You shame the youngest stars. What a ride.”

Drew Taylorwriter at TheWrap, added: “#TopGunMaverick is a profound cinematic experience and easily the best movie of the year. What Kosinski, @chrismcquarrie, @eddiehamilton and of course @TomCruise have accomplished is epic and intimate, heartbreaking and heartbreaking. As good as you think it gets better.”

The ankle reporter Jeff Schneider said: “TOP GUN: MAVERICK is the perfect blockbuster. Not only did it contain dazzling dogfight sequences, but I actually cried, it’s so emotional. And call me crazy, but I humbly predict it will garner a Best Picture nomination next year. Not only is it SO good, it’s VERY good.”

In the meantime total movie‘s Jamie Graham tweeted, “I’m not sure it’s possible to make a more perfect sequel than Top Gun: Maverick. If you like the original, this is everything you’ve been waiting for 36 years, balancing nostalgic throwbacks with a fresh, dynamic storyline and stunning aerial footage. Dead emosh too.”
