Times Square gets NYC’s first garbage bags in latest salvo against rats

Advice is everything folks!

The Big Apple’s top officials said Wednesday that New York’s notorious habit of lining sidewalks with rodent-infested piles of trash is finally on its way to becoming the dustbin of history — starting two blocks from Times Square.

The area’s business district, the Times Square Alliance and the Department of Sanitation have partnered to operate and manage New York’s first two curbside bag collection bins, located at 41st Street and Seventh Avenue and 43rd Street and Eighth Avenue will.

“No matter where I go, I keep hearing the complaints. Loud and clear, New Yorkers, you want clean streets; They want trash off our sidewalks,” Mayor Eric Adams said. “You’re tired of the rodents, you’re tired of the smell, you’re tired of seeing food, litter and spills.”

The launch comes two years after the pilot program was first announced in March 2020, just as the coronavirus pandemic hit the city.

The goal is to place the garbage bags in a central storage location that will keep the bags off the sidewalks and away from the rats trying to make their way for food.

“These sealed bins are in a spot where bags of bins used to stand on the curb for hours and rats provided a free all-you-can-eat buffet,” Sanitation Commissioner Jessie Tisch said. “We’ve talked for years about wanting to change this, and now we’re announcing new means to test our clean curb containers for all five counties.”

Officials said Wednesday they plan to experiment with the trash cans in all five boroughs — with the next for Brooklyn by summer.

The program is also scheduled to receive $1.3 million per year in funding.
