Time for the Knicks to keep watching Myles Turner

With a reported shake-up looming in Indiana, the Knicks should keep a close eye on Myles Turner

The New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers are both out looking into the knockout stages in the Eastern Conference. It’s no secret that the Knicks are going all out to make it to the knockouts with the current team. For the Pacers, it’s a much different story.

Indiana enters the season with a new coach, a similar roster, and high expectations. They were unable to meet those expectations during the 10-16 start. Now, there could be a fire on the horizon.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that the Pacers are “expected to open up commercial conversations around some of their veteran members.” In other words, they were willing to listen to offers for Caris LeVert, Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner.

Let’s focus on that last name – Myles Turner. On the field, he’s clearly the right fit for the Knicks, but as we all know with deals, it’s not so easy.

Myles Turner opens up the breach

Myles Turner fits the basic mold of a rim center in the NBA. He can secure the defensive perimeter (more on that momentarily) and act as a tire menace on attack.

However, he can do more than roll into the basket when fouled. Turner is one of the best stretch players in the NBA, ushering in the pick-and-pop game. The 25-year-old – yes, he’s still only 25 – is scoring 39.5% from three out of 4.6 attempts per game.

Those are solid three-point numbers for any player, let alone a center with all-round Defensive potential. Turner’s gravity as a shooter and select-and-pop threat will help open up space in the paint for others.

Even when Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier’s off-season additions didn’t work out, they showed a willingness to improve the team’s gap.

Mitchell Robinson, Nerlens Noel, and Taj Gibson brought to the table a lot but could not shoot the backpack. Turner could completely change the dynamics of this offense.

Myles Turner is suitable for the Thibs defense

We all know Tom Thibodeau Would love to have a rim guard on the floor as much as possible. If he can go the full 48 minutes with elite rim guards, he will. Turner would be an upgrade over anyone the Knicks have on the defensive list.

He’s a two-time NBA champion and currently tops the league with 2.8 tackles per game. This won’t be a case of the Knicks sacrificing defense to add fire on attacks.

No, Turner will be a definite upgrade in defense alongside his potentially game-changing offensive skill set.

What would happen for the Knicks to make a deal?

So Turner is a perfect fit for what the Knicks want to do in defence, and he’ll help balance out attacks. What else do you know here? The Knicks should make this deal right away, right?

Well, despite what Twitter NBA might lead you to believe, transactions are not as easy as “watch players, buy players”. This is not NBA 2K.

Teams have been calling the Pacers for years on Turner, according to Charania’s latest report and multiple reports over the past few seasons.

It’s safe to assume that a deal for Myles Turner won’t come cheap. The good news for the Knicks is that they have a treasure trove of young players, veterans under flexible contracts and draft assets.

If they want to close a deal, they have ammo. It depends on Leon Rose and the rest of the front office to decide how much is too much for Turner.

It’s safe to assume a deal for Turner won’t happen immediately. As Charania reports, the Pacers are expected to start making calls to Turner and others. That doesn’t mean the Pacers will definitely trigger a Turner trade.

It is still possible that they decide to remove Sabonis and/or LeVert to build around Turner and a core of young players.

For now, the Knicks can save time as they wait for the right moment to strike. Turner isn’t someone who will put the Knicks in the title fight right away, but he could be an important part of the championship roster.

If nothing else, the front office will get a chance to see Turner up close and personal on Wednesday night. The Knicks will keep a close eye on him.
