Threatening Durham school on social media, officials say

DURHAM, NC (WNCN) – The Durham County Sheriff and officials at Durham Public Schools say a threat was made against a school in the district on Thursday.

The threat was directed at Southern High School, known as the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability, located at 800 Clayton Road, according to a press release from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office.

The threat was made via social media posts, the press release said.

School officials and lawmakers said they had “identified the source,” but said information about the source “must remain confidential.”

Both authorities said they have taken steps to ensure “there is no ongoing threat to the school”.

“We take threats of any kind seriously and will continue to educate our youth that there are consequences for using social media in this way,” Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead said in the release.

School officials said the school’s resource officers helped identify the source of the social media posts.

“There is no excuse for instilling fear in a school community,” wrote Southern school principal Jerome Leathers in the press release.

No further information was released, except that officials said the threats were “peacefully” resolved.
