It happens when the finances of thousands of families are hampered by cost of living crisis.

High and rising inflation has led to prices of important supermarket staples to fly up.

The government has spent £500 million on local councils across the country, which are tasked with distributing funds to their residents.

But the availability of the grant and how to apply for it depends on where you live.

Each council decides what assistance to provide and who can request it.

How much cash – and how to get it?

Peterborough City Council is handing out £15 per child supermarket vouchers to cover free school meals for the second half of February.

It is paid out after £30 per child during the Christmas holidays.

The Scottish Government was awarded £41m, while the Welsh Government was awarded £25m and the Northern Ireland Executive received £14m, in line with the Barnett formula.

If you don’t qualify for funding, there are other programs that can help.

People who receive welfare assistance can claim up to £1,000 cash and free vouchers for their food, furniture and utility costs.
