‘They want to kill me’: Joe Lycett explains why he was upset that David Beckham went to Qatar

Comedian Joe Lycett has opened up about his latest stunt targeting David Beckham over his promotion from Qatar to the 2022 World Cup.

Lycett slammed Beckham for his lucrative deal with Qatar and threatened to wipe out £10,000 in cash if the former England footballer didn’t drop his support for the country over its stance on gay rights. (It is illegal to be gay in Qatar.)

After Beckham, whom Lycett described as a “gay icon”, didn’t respond, Lycett appeared to shred the money (£1,000 for every £1million of Beckham’s reported deal with Qatar) in a video shared on social media. However, he later revealed that he was actually just pretending to wasting money and instead donated £10,000 to LGBT+ charities.

At a performance on Lorraine On Friday morning (December 9), Lycett reflected on the stunt.

“That’s the thing, I’m open to countries that are diverse and have their own beliefs and all those things,” he said. “The world is an interesting place, there’s all kinds of diversity in the world and I don’t mind.

“But I think, as a baseline, I think killing people and imprisoning them for who they are should be condemned wherever it happens. There’s way too much happening all over the world. And it happens here sometimes, so we should always name it.”

He went on to say that there are “a lot of really good things about Qatar” but “the thing where they want to kill me” is “not a good thing”.

“Actually, I’d rather not die, Lorraine, because then I’d stop participating Lorraine program,” he joked. “I love being there Lorraine! It would be weird to have me as a corpse on this show.

“Well, I haven’t heard from you [Beckham]. I am very polite and a very nice young man… I would still love to talk to him and I promise I will be nice too. Hopefully we’ll have a little more discussion with his people and hopefully we’ll get on with that. So I’m hoping. He still has time to change his mind. The World Cup is not over yet.”

Also this week, Lycett reflected on his headline-grabbing appearance on Laura Kuenssberg’s morning show in September, in which he sarcastically praised Liz Truss.

The comedian has also dropped out of the running to replace Matt Lucas The Great British Bake Off.
