The lead guitarist for rock band They Might Be Giants was injured in a “dramatic” car accident on the Upper East Side involving a suspected drunk driver who police said ran a red light.
The tragedy happened around 12:45 a.m. Thursday when John Flansburgh was getting car service from his band’s show at the Bowery Ballroom when his drive was t-boned by a Honda at Park Avenue and E. 102nd Street, according to reports Bullen and Flansburgh’s own account.
“I was in a pretty dramatic car accident,” Flansburgh wrote in an Instagram post. “As we were crossing an intersection, our car was hit by a vehicle traveling at very high speed.
“The force of the impact actually threw our car onto its side. As the driver and I adjusted to our new sideways reality of broken glass and airbags, we caught the ominous smell of motor oil and smoke.”
Flansburgh said he was “forever grateful” to the city’s firefighters and emergency responders who were able to “extricate” him and his driver from the wreckage and take them to the hospital.
A doctor told Flansburgh he had broken seven ribs in multiple places and “won’t be anywhere but a bed for the foreseeable future,” the Post said.
“While the pain in my side has only gotten worse since then, it’s my heart that’s really breaking at these events,” the musician said of the alternative rock band’s postponement of their current tour, which is primarily dedicated to the ’80s College is known for the radio hit “Birdhouse in Your Soul”.
Police officers say William Mota was driving the Honda that crashed into Flansburg’s car after running a red light at the intersection.
When police arrived, the Bronx man told officers he didn’t drive and that the car didn’t belong to him, according to the NYPD.
He later tried to get his belongings from the car and run away, but the police stopped him.
Mota was charged with DWI, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, refusing a breathalyzer and traffic violations.
