The Yankees got the confirmation they feared with aide Chad Green, who will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow at the end of the season.
“What Greenie means to this team and what a great, reliable player he’s been to us, that’s hard news,” Aaron Boone said ahead of Sunday’s doubleheader against the White Sox. “With surgery there is usually some certainty.
“It’s usually something that pitchers can come back from. I know he will. He’s an outstanding athlete who takes great care of himself and has a really good work ethic. I know that with time he will be fine. I expect he will play at the level we expect for a few more years.”
Green, who has pitched the most innings of any Yankees auxiliary since 2016, was pulled from an appearance in Baltimore Thursday in the middle of a tackle with forearm problems, with the Yankees saying they considered the injury “significant.”
