Warning: spoilers ahead for The Witcher season 2.
A theory of fans for The Witcher season 3 has speculated about the possible fate of a protagonist who seems to have been killed… but perhaps another life is possible.
inside second season afterward Netflix fantasy series, Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) returned to Kaer Morhen, where he grew up and trained to be a monster hunter, with his young curator, Princess Ciri (Freya Allan).
When he arrived, he was reunited with his teacher Vesemir (Kim Bodnia) along with several other witches, including his close friend Eskel (Basil Eidenbenz).
Eskel is infected by Leshen, a deadly hungry forest monster shaped like a tree.
He eventually transforms into a mutant Leshy, forcing Geralt and Vesemir to fight him and eventually knocking him down, resulting in his untimely death.
Some fans were upset about the portrayal of Eskel’s death, in addition to the backlash over the disparity between the character’s personality and his roles in the books and video games.
A fan shared a theory on Reddit speculated that the reason why there was something wrong about the witch was that he was not actually Eskel, but an imposter.
Going over the handle u/Kilimanjaro90, they write: ‘Dead Eskel was a doppler,’ dopplers are shape-shifters who can take the form of any creature they encounter in The Witcher universe.
The Reddit user explained that some of what Eskel said hinted that he might not be a real person, as he seemed to forget ‘common knowledge’.
Speaking of Eskel’s first fight with Lesher, the fan said: ‘The first time he came and said he fought for six hours and Vesemir said why don’t you light a fire in its heart or something that sounds like common witch knowledge but he doesn’t know [because] he is not a wizard. ‘
They added that on a second attempt, when he tried to ‘punch Geralt, he failed miserably’.
They assert: “We know Geralt that Geralt and Eskel had a few drinks but he is another wizard and should at least be popular,” they assert and conclude: great war. ‘
While this theory should make a compelling twist and may please fans who aren’t satisfied with the show’s character traits, not everyone is convinced.
One Reddit user questioned what the connection would be for Eskel, saying: ‘I see hope but why would they do it? Does Eskel not die add anything to the story? What role does Eskel have in future events? ‘
They continued: ‘They just killed him for dramatic reasons and although I’d also like an unknown witch to be killed for him, let’s face it, what’s done is done.’
Another wittily commented: ‘I like your way of thinking… ..if only.’
While on the Netflix show Eskel seems rather rude, fans of the character say that he was previously portrayed as a more caring and ‘kind’ person.
‘Why? Why would you do this to a character that the entire fandom loves and would be welcomed with open arms? Do you know how much Eskel means to so many of us? I just can’t worry about how people might think the fans would do this well,’ one person tweeted.
‘I’m so excited for Season 2. But they hurt me right out of the gate with this nonsense Eskel. What a great way to ruin a lovable, kind character. Thanks for ruining my excitement,’ another viewer commented.
The Witcher is available to watch on Netflix.
