The White House has called Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s migrant bus plan a publicity stunt

This week, Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of Emergencies to charter buses to bring migrants released from federal custody to Washington, DC

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki called Abbott’s immigrant bus plan to the nation’s capital a “publicity stunt.”

The plans come as the Title 42 public health regulation is due to end at the end of May.

“(There is an) incredibly large number of migrants that the Biden administration is leaving right there in McAllen. Texas is now offering the process of using or bringing all of these migrants to Washington DC by bus,” Abbott said during a news conference Wednesday.

Leaders in DC spoke out against Abbott’s plans Thursday afternoon.

“(We) are not aware under what authority the governor would do that. I think it’s pretty clear that this is a publicity stunt. His own office admits that a migrant would have to be transported voluntarily and cannot force him to do so,” Psaki said.

When ABC13 tried to get some questions from Gov. Abbott, his office referred us to the Texas Department of Emergency Management instead.

They told us that the voluntary process will be similar to mass hurricane evacuation. They said local leaders must contact the state and request the buses if there is a need in their community. At this point, migrants outside of federal custody will be asked if they would like a ride to the country’s capital.

Officials from the Texas Department of Emergency Management confirmed that funding for this initiative will be drawn from the $2 billion border security budget allocated by the Texas Legislature.

As for these buses, we have been told that they are already being prepared and inspected before being distributed to communities across our state.
