Avatar: The Way of Water certainly made a splash at the box office.
The film grossed a whopping $53 million on opening night alone, according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo.
The James Cameron flick, which The Post called “the brilliant sequel we’ve been waiting for,” is expected to gross $170 million in its opening weekend, according to Yahoo Finance.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which took first place last Friday, slipped a notch to second place with a take of almost $1.5 million.
With a production budget of $250 million, it is the third most expensive Marvel Comics film in history, behind Thor: Love and Thunder and behind Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Endgame.
Dark holiday comedy Violent Night came in third place, taking home just over $1.4 million.
Disney’s Strange World stayed in a disappointing fourth place, earning just $521,000. According to Variety, the animated film is set to drop $100 million in theaters. It’s available to stream on Disney+ as early as December 23.
“The Menu”, which was in third place last Friday, was served in fifth place this week with a profit of $500,000.
