The Vermont sheriff’s deputy was shot dead by cops in Saratoga Springs

An off-duty Vermont sheriff’s deputy was shot dead by police officers in Saratoga Springs after he exchanged fire with a group of men early Sunday, police said.

The MP was shot multiple times after ignoring officers’ requests to drop his gun, police and the local mayor said at a news conference recorded by The Daily Gazette.

Saratoga Springs Police said the shooting between the off-duty deputy and a group of men began as a heated argument around 3 a.m

The deputy was allegedly thrown into a parked vehicle and knocked down by three people on the corner of Broadway and Caroline Street.

He brandished a gun while brushing himself off and exchanging gunfire with another man in the group, who was also armed. According to the police, the two fired between seven and eight shots at each other.

Nearby police officers heard the shots and rushed to the scene of the shooting, where they saw the deputy with the gun.

Officers repeatedly asked the deputy to drop his gun, bodycam footage released by the department shows.

He refused to let go of his gun and the police opened fire.

“By my count, there are at least eight separate, clear, unambiguous orders to put your gun down and get on the ground,” Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner James Montagnino said at the news conference. “They are all ignored.”

He suffered 10 gunshot wounds, although police said it’s unclear if he was shot 10 times as the injuries include both entry and exit wounds. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is in stable condition, according to WRGB-Albany.
