The US Senate confirms the selection of President Biden for the federal courts in California and New York

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday voted to confirm two California State Court judges for the federal bench and authorize the appointment of the General Counsel of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America as a federal judge in Manhattan.

The Senate voted 51 to 44 to confirm Alameda County Superior Court Justice Trina Thompson as federal judge in the Northern District of California and 51 to 45 to confirm Riverside County Superior Court Justice Sunshine Sykes. to serve in the central district of the state.

It also voted 51-47 for President Joe Biden to appoint Jennifer Rochon, a former Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel partner who has been the Girl Scouts’ top attorney since 2013, as a judge in the Southern District of New York.

Senate Democrats are scrambling to confirm as many of Biden’s nominees for the judiciary as possible ahead of November’s midterm elections when they risk losing their narrow 50-50 control of the chamber.

The three nominees reflect Biden’s drive to bring more gender and racial diversity to the Bundesbank. More than 70% of its 92 district and appellate courts were women, and the vast majority were black.

“Our current federal bank is not representative of the diversity of our democracy,” Democratic US Senator Alex Padilla of California said in a speech on Wednesday. “We have work to do to rebuild a judiciary worthy of the belief of the American people.”

The White House said Sykes, a member of the Navajo Nation, would be the first Native American federal judge to ever serve in California and only the fifth to serve actively on the federal bench at the national level.

Thompson will be the only active black female district court judge in the Northern District of California, which includes San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland, the White House said in November when she was nominated.
