The US Navy seized 1,400 AK-47 guns, more than 226K bullets from Iranian ships

The US Navy has seized more than 1,400 AK-47 assault rifles and 226,600 rounds of ammunition from an Iranian ship bound for Yemen in the North Arabian Sea, the State Department said.

The seizure occurred on December 20 when US Navy forces identified a stateless fishing boat, follow to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

United States Naval Forces Central Command speak The ship was traveling along a route previously used by smugglers transporting weapons to the Houthis in Yemen, in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and US sanctions.

The US Navy said that 5 Yemeni crew members on board will all be returned to Yemen. US forces sank the ship, which was considered a “danger” to commercial shipping in the area.

Iran supported the Houthis in Yemen the fight the country’s Saudi-backed government.

“The illegal arms shipments to Yemen are facilitating the brutal Houthi attack on Marib, increasing the suffering of civilians,” the State Department said. “Fighting further – whether in Marib or elsewhere – will only bring more suffering. The Yemeni sides must come together to reach a political agreement to end the war.”
