The Teacher: How Channel 5 turned Budapest into Bradford

Channel 5new drama’s, Teachermay have been set in Bradford – but it was actually filmed in a completely different country.

The stars of the show Sheridan Smith as a teacher accused of having sex with one of her students on a night she can’t remember.

With the show airing four nights every night, viewers praised the actress for her work, calling it a “master of acting”.

However, what viewers may also be impressed by is the filming location of the film. Although set in the West Yorkshire city of Bradford, Teacher was mainly filmed entirely in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary.

Show creator Mike Benson explains that the key motivation for filming was financial.

“We had to shoot in Budapest for funding reasons, and the team did a great job making it look like Bradford,” he explains.

With filming taking place during a pandemic, Benson, the cast and crew must adhere to restrictions to minimize the risk of infection. The experience, he said, was like a “pressure cooker” at times, but ultimately production was successful.

“There were times when I didn’t think we were going to make it,” Benson said, “but luckily we have a really professional team and a really good Covid employee, and we managed to get through it.” it.”

Smith, who stars as Jenna, credited the “wonderful” work done by the team that shot the candid scenes of Bradford at their main filming location, Budapest.

She said: “When we all went to Budapest, anxiety [of travelling during a pandemic] went and it was a lovely job.

“They found the coolest places to use, then they did a day of shooting rooftops in Bradford and suddenly it all comes together and you don’t think it’s Budapest. They have done an incredible job – the magic of television! ”

Co-starring Smith is Samuel Bottomley as Kyle, the student Jenna is said to have slept with after a drunken stint in a nightclub. He said the architecture of Budapest shows it to look like Bradford.

“[The school was actually] a college in Budapest, but they did a great job in making it look like West Yorkshire – apartments and schools, you wouldn’t know you were in Hungary,” he said.

Not all viewers find Budapest completely convincing as a prop for Bradford. One person wrote on Twitter: “Instantly recognize Bradford’s rooftops in the new TV series Teacher, but then was perplexed by the giant white stone buildings. No wonder, the rest was filmed in Budapest! ”
