The Strokes: Julian Casablancas responds to ‘strange questions’ after criticism of Roskilde’s performance

The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas has responded to criticism of the band’s headlining show at Roskilde Festival in Denmark.

The performance, which took place last Saturday (July 2), received comments online from festival-goers who claimed the band got on stage half an hour late and that Casablancas appeared to be drunk when they arrived.

Participants suggested that the frontman’s ad-libs between songs were questionable, with a video showing Casablancas giving a two-minute intro to “Last Nite.”

“Throughout the concert, these negative, inappropriate monologues between songs just kept getting longer and ruined the energy and momentum of the experience,” one concert-goer wrote on Reddit.

“It was absolutely bizarre. People loved the show but Julian was completely blown away,” read another comment.

sound scene gave the gig a star in an online review, claiming Casablancas made “one inappropriate and instantly momentum-busting comment after another” during his “incoherent monologues.”

In a now-deleted Instagram post (reported by stereo rubber), Casablanas dismissed the claims. “I’m not on Twitter enough to know what a confused fan is thinking or pretending to know, but I’m fine…as far as I know,” he wrote. “People have been asking me weird questions — ahh, the stupid side of social media … Lame-Os run around so tough and free.”

“PS the concerns and questions are nice and ok! It’s the strangers who announce / pretend they don’t know a shit that’s dumb. (weird questions, not the silly side haha),” he continued, before the post was deleted.

Other contestants disputed the claims about how the show went down.

“Apart from the 30 minute delay, I had no problems whatsoever with the concert,” one Reddit user wrote, adding, “Some people exaggerate and lie about how it went (e.g. Julian dissed the crowd, the Festival interrupted them, they only played half a movement, just stuff like that that didn’t happen). I don’t care if people think that, but I don’t like misinformation.”

The Independent has reached out to a representative of the band for comment.
