Pre-alpha footage of Skate 4 has made its way to social media, and after viewing it, the reaction from fans and industry insiders has been a mix of good vibes and negativity.
As the Tony Hawks franchise reached its peak, the games began a slow decline that saw its popularity wane until it was pushed aside for a few years in the doldrums. Meanwhile, another skateboarding franchise came along to steal its thunder and fans – Skate.
EA’s approach to the genre moved away from button-based combos and controls towards the “Flick it” system. Skate’s gameplay wanted players to use thumbsticks and move them in specific ways to perform tricks.
Gamers have been clamoring for a long-awaited sequel to 2010s Skate 3, and it was confirmed not long ago. There hasn’t been too much on the Skate 4 front lately, but some pre-alpha footage appears to have leaked, leaving players divided on what they saw.
Skate 4 fans could fall back on something else?
News about the Skate 4 pre-alpha first broke on April 20, 2022, and respected industry insider and analyst Jeff Grubb shared footage of the gameplay via his Twitter account.
He said: “This is pre-alpha material from Skate 4. This matches what I’ve heard from several people about where the game is located. They’re trying to get the right feel, which is probably the most important aspect of a skate game.”

In the 33 seconds of gameplay we get what is sure to be a very early build of the game, showing a player grinding down a street, hitting some vintage kickflips before going completely boardless and doing some crazy front flips. We also see the bail motor in action as the skater fails to land properly.
Grubb said “this is all exciting” and described how EA works hard and gives the game time to thrive and reach its potential. A few commenters agreed with one person saying: “This is a great start. That front flip off the board and land on it is sick. Can not Hardly Wait. Hope the city is more.”
On the other hand, Tom Henderson, an industry insider, wasn’t as enthusiastic and positive about the footage, saying, “It’s sad to see Skate 4 leaked this way (because it’s really early development material).”

It seemed that some of him follower were also unfazed by early gameplay: “It’s sad to see but at the same time we have to be cutthroat against EA, sad for the developers but the work seems to speak for itself. Reminds me of Skate 3, I hope for the best,” said one user.
On the Henderson side, it’s hard to tell if the disappointment is because the game is in such an early state, or because it looks too much like Skate 3. In any case, there will definitely be more reactions to the development of Skate 4.
