The San Diego Gulls lose to San Jose 4-1, but the Charity wins the team’s annual teddy bear throw

The San Diego Guls fell victim to Saturday’s third comeback against San Jose Barracuda, losing 4-1 at Pechanga Arena.
Benoit-Olivier Groulx scored a powerful playstyle goal, his first of the season. Olle Eriksson Ek suffered the first loss of his career to San Jose, stopping 28/31 shots.
“I think we’ve made a lot of progress in the last month or six weeks, but this week is definitely not the week we want it to be,” Gulls Head coach Joel Bouchard said as his team lost its third game in a row.
Game, a match of teams at the end Pacific Team of the Tournament, was still a goalless battle all the way to the center of goal, and Groulx’s strength played with 2:13 left.
But the Gulls saw the San Jose hurricane return in its closing stages. First, Patrick Holaway finished the game at 4:08 in the scoring phase of his first American Hockey League goal.
San Jose continued to push, with Evander Kane scoring the winning goal at 9:40 in the meantime. He jumped onto a loose ball, shooting past Eriksson Ek’s leg to give his team a 2-1 lead.
About three minutes later, Scott Reedy opened the gap with Barracuda’s first goal of the game. The Gulls keeper made a save initially, but Reedy fought right in front of the net for the rebound and his 13th goal of the season.
Reedy leads all AHL rookies in goalscoring and is third among the first years with 13-9 = 22 points.
However, the game was not a total loss. Gulls fans have been waiting for the chance to take part in the team’s Teddy Bear Toss, an annual event where they can throw stuffed animals on the ice after the team’s first goal.
After Groulx’s goal, the bears flew, along with the players and staff involved in the collection of toys. The Seagulls will donate the bears to a number of local charities, including Ronald McDonald House, SAY San Diego, Father Joe’s Villages.
The Gulls’ home stands continue at 7pm on Wednesday as they welcome the Stockton Heat lead team to Pechanga.
