Although eight of nine starting batters had at least one hit that night, the Red Sox lost Game 2 at Fenway Park to the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night.

Boston recorded the second-most goals in a game this season with 23 losses (25 against the Houston Astros on August 24th). That’s the franchise’s most hits in a loss in nine innings.

MLB teams that score at least 20 total hits in a game in 2023 were undefeated until Saturday.

Most notably, Red Sox center fielder Wilyer Abreu led the team with five hits in five at-bats. One of those hits was a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth that brought Boston within one point. He also drew a walk and drove in three runs to keep his team within range of the red-hot Orioles.

Abreu became the first MLB player since Kyle Schwarber in 2015 to record multiple four-plus hit contests in his first 12 career games. He also beat the Astros 4-5 on August 24th, in the same game his team reached its season high in hits.

Other Boston hitters with multiple hits in the loss included Rafael Devers (4-6), Justin Turner (2-5, one walk), Masataka Yoshida (3-6), Trevor Story (3-6), Enmanuel Valdez ( 2-6) and Connor Wong (2-5). Turner got the Red Sox on the field in the bottom of the first inning with a golf swing of a two-run home run.

First baseman Triston Casas was the only Boston hitter to go hitless on Saturday.

However, the Orioles hitters totaled 14 hits and 13 runs to earn their seventh straight win. In fact, they are the first team since 1981 to win a game by 23 or more goals. This contest also took place at Fenway, but it lasted 20 innings.

On the other hand, the last time the Red Sox lost a game in which they scored more than 20 hits was in 1960 against the Senators from Washington.

Boston wants to avoid being defeated by this 90-win Baltimore club at 1:35 EST on Sunday.
