The proxy war between Morgan Luttrell and Christian Collins plays out in the race for Texas’ 8th Congressional District

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (KTRK) – Back in April 2021 when U.S. Representative Kevin Brady announced his retirement, the race to represent the 8th Congressional District began.

There are 11 candidates in this field. Campaign finance experts and reports cite Morgan Luttrell and Christian Collins as the frontrunners.

As of the end of 2021, Luttrell has raised about $1.9 million and Collins has raised about $333,000.

“We have to get our country back, and that’s not going to happen because of the weak Republicans who have come along to get along and just sit through their first year and watch it unfold. We have to have Collins speak.

Collins said he was the first in his family to get involved in politics. His father is a pastor and Collins says he sees politics as his mission.

“A lot of young people are leaning towards socialism, so we need some conservative, liberal, right-wing activists who will bring young people into our party, galvanize the movement and bring the people into the fight to save this nation. That’s what I’m all about,” he said.

Luttrell is a former Navy SEAL and has been in the military for 14 years. He said his background and life experience made him different.

“That led me to DC, where I worked with President Trump at the Department of Energy under Secretary Perry as a senior adviser. I’ve worked in two DC offices, led the way. direct and manage them,” said Luttrell.

He is a business owner and recently an assistant professor at Sam Houston State University.

“In the end, I’m just a quiet country boy who’s been through a lot and I’m not afraid to make tough decisions,” says Luttrell.

Both candidates cited border security and inflation as issues they wanted to address as soon as they were elected.

Overall, the differences on issues between the two candidates are modest. Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston, said the race was more about their personalities and who was supporting whom.

“This race is also a proxy war between other national figures and state figures. You have Christian Collins, who is endorsed by Ted Cruz because he’s a former employee, and you have Morgan Luttrell. , who Rottinghaus explained.

When it comes to voting records, Rottinghaus said he doesn’t think there will be much of a difference between the candidates.

“It’s really a question of emphasis, so that they have different things that they focus on. It’s clear that Morgan Luttrell, a former army officer, is someone who considers security interests quite important. Christian Collins, on the other hand, is more interested in the kind of Rottinghaus that describes the social problems that emerge in American public policy.

Both Collins and Luttrell are having rallies at 4 p.m. Saturday. Collins had the likes of Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Madison Cawthorn in attendance in support of him, while Luttrell’s rally was attended by Lieutenant Colonel Patrick and former Governor Perry.
