West story by Steven Spielberg first musical. And that was the debut. “West story felt like Spielberg was in control and knew exactly what he wanted to do,” wrote our Mike Ryan in Words of appreciation of the film, adding that people are bound to argue about which version of the musical is better, original won Best Picture 1961 or a 2021 adaptation with Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler, but “there is little debate that this West story would become the Steven Spielberg Classic. Damn hot.”
Now that Spielberg has crossed musicals off his genre list, what’s left?
“I’ve been asked that question throughout my 40-year career, if not longer, and I’ve always said ‘A musical is something I haven’t done.’ What I left out to say is that one genre I haven’t really dealt with is Western,” I said Yahoo! Entertain. “So who knows? Maybe I’ll push one day. Who knows?”
Spielberg made a lot of movies about horses ( dinosaur of the Wild West, I always say), but the closest thing he came to creating a West was manufacturing Cowboys & Aliens. If his western film, should he choose to make a film, consisting of a two-hour continuous shot of a cactus, would it still better Cowboys & Aliens.
