The NY GOP wants the special prosecutor to investigate how AG James handled the aide’s sexual harassment case

New York’s Republican lawmakers are urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Attorney General Letitia James’ handling of the sexual harassment case of former Chief of Staff Ibrahim Khan.

They are immediately appointing a special prosecutor to investigate both the sexual harassment allegations and abuse of the incident by Attorney General James and the ensuing internal investigation,” read the letter sent by MP Claudia Tenney to Hochul on Tuesday.

The letter was co-signed by Rep. Elise Stefanik, the powerful Chair of the House Republican Conference, and Congressman Chris Jacobs.

A timeline released by James’ office showed she was aware of the allegations on October 2 and hired an outside firm to investigate on October 4. Khan handed in his resignation on November 22 – effective December 31 – before the inquest report was finalized and established misconduct complaints involving two women on December 2, when it finally became public.

One of James’ most impactful actions as Attorney General was to hire outside lawyers to investigate a series of sexual harassment allegations against the ex-Prime Minister. Andrew Cuomo.

Last year’s devastating report concluded that Cuomo was a serial molester and resigned under threat of impeachment despite his denial.

James said during an interview with The Post last week that the Cuomo investigation is a public referral and, unlike the Khan case, it must release a public report.

“We are protecting the rights of individuals and it is important to understand that this was a private investigation, separate and independent from the investigation we conducted into the former governor – which was a regulatory investigation and a legitimate referral investigation was.” James told the Post outside their Brooklyn brownstone home.

She also said on NY1, “We conducted a thorough, independent investigation without any conflict of interest or impropriety.”

Hochul spokeswoman Hazel Crampton-Hays said: “We will review the letter as soon as we receive it.”

Last week, Hochul suggested there was no need to investigate James’ actions.

“There needs to be accountability and, to my knowledge, steps have been taken in that direction,” Hochul said.

One of the Khan’s alleged victims, Sophia Quintanar, said James conducted the investigation adequately but botched communicating the case to the public.

“My problem was never with Attorney General Letitia James or how the investigation was being handled. My allegations were quickly addressed and an independent investigation substantiated my claims,” Quintanar said in a statement to The Post.

“I have objected to the unclear nature of communications following the completion of the investigation.”

But GOP lawmakers said in the letter Hochul should not let James off the hook.

“We look forward to your assurance that the allegations against Mr Khan and Ms James will be investigated fully, independently and transparently.”

The Post also reported on Monday that a former press secretary at the AG office resigned “in lieu of termination” in 2019 after being accused of abusing female employees – before the Khan case surfaced.
