The number of spam texts increased sharply

Spam calls have caused us problems for decades. But now, spam is taking over.

Between 2021 and 2022, spam messages have increased by nearly 60%. Now, WINK News will teach you how to spot them and how to keep yourself safe.

From romantic scams to fake amazon updates to fake bank messages, many of us are no stranger to the fake messages going around.

Now, a police department fake t-shirt scam is taking place in Southwest Florida. The Cape Coral Police Department posted screenshots of these messages on social media to warn the community that Cape PD does not sell t-shirts.

According to a report from spam blocking app RoboKiller, spam messages increased by 58% in 2021 from the year before. Alan Crowetz is the CEO of InfoStream Inc. and a cyber expert. “It costs them nothing to send out those millions. If even 100% of 1% of people fall for the scam, they are making a lot of money,” Crowetz said.

Spam texts are often irregular and include a link. That’s because it’s easy to copy a sitelink, Crowetz says.

“They will usually put a link there. Sometimes it looks legit, sometimes less legit,” Crowetz said. “But in either case, the trick is to not follow the link in the email, go directly to the source and check with them directly, or in the worst case, pick up the phone and give them a call.”

So what happens if you reply to spam messages or you accidentally open a link? “In general, it is not the end of the world. The ones to watch out for are anything that involves cash, Bitcoin, or gift cards. When that money is gone, it goes away,” Corwetz said.

Regarding spam, there is good news and bad news. The bad news is that these types of texts aren’t going away anytime soon. The good news is that you can take the steps and make sure you get it. For example, you can block senders or enable filtering on your device.

“The best filter by far is the viewer of this story. You are your primary filter, your brain, and your paranoia,” says Crowetz.

And your best bet, if you keep getting Polish is to ignore them.

“These bad guys are not fools. They are very, very smart in most cases. So no matter what the latest technology, the latest angle, if they find something that works, they’ll use it a lot. And right now, text messaging is another “hot” way to try to take advantage of people,” Crowetz said.

Crowetz told WINK News that interacting with a message can leave you vulnerable. So, if you talk to a scammer on the phone or provide any personal information, be sure to call your bank and credit card company to let them know what happened. .
