A chippy HERO employee has died trying to rescue a female friend who committed suicide at sea despite being unable to swim, an inquest was launched yesterday.
Alex Gibson, 22, was found face down on the shores of Blackpool, Lancs.
He was on a night out when the woman, 18, called him last July, saying she wanted to end her life.
The woman, who has a history of mental health problems, told Blackpool she managed to swim to shore.
Alex was found at 5:6 a.m. dead in the hospital.
An autopsy revealed he was more than twice the legal limit for driving.
Pathologist Sudoba Weerasinghe said the cause of death was drowning, which was caused by alcohol use.
Coroner Alan Wilson said: ‘Knowing he couldn’t swim, he bravely got into the water and tried to help her.
Verdict: Death by wrongdoing.
