The victim, identified by family as 65-year-old David Lind, was found dead in his bedroom at 4813 Kinglet Street.
Houston Fire Department District Supervisor Tony Brown says they were called to the house fire around 5:15 a.m. on March 1.
Brown says two men, described as David’s roommates, had already fled when they arrived.
“We had two residents who escaped themselves. They were already outside. They told us one person was trapped inside,” Brown said.

Brown says firefighters quickly put out the fire and then went inside to look for Lind.
Lind’s family says he was found in his bedroom with his pet Chihuahua, who also died.
Neighbors and family say Lind is kind, caring and always ready to help.
“Always there for you when you need him,” said his daughter Joy Cauthen. “He was a great father. He was a great person.”
Speaking to ABC13 by phone from her home in Cleveland, Texas, Cauthen says the fire took her father away and destroyed her family’s home.
“I walked around the fire truck and turned into my husband and cried. It was devastating,” Cauthen said.
Cauthen’s grandparents bought the house in the 1960’s where they raised their father, sister and brother.
“He grew up in this house. It’s devastating that he lost his life in this house too,” said Cauthen.
Eventually the house was passed on to Lind and his sister. The two lived there at different times. Cauthen also lived at the southwest Houston residence while she and her husband saved money.
“It was just always there. It was always a place I could go,” Cauthen said.
Among the few items she was able to recover from the ashes are old photos of her father as a baby and her grandparents.
Houston police say they are involved because suspicious wounds were found on Lind’s body.
The Houston Fire Department is still working to determine how the fire started.
