The Galley Leaves from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone cause a stir at auction

The only known surviving set of galley sheets for JK Rowlings Harry Potter And the Philosopher’s Stone was sold for £37,500 after causing “quite a stir” at auction.

The uncorrected leaves, never shown before, are a version of the book that was mailed out before the final proofreading, and consists of 224 numbered pages on 109 leaves.

The set of sheets sold for almost double its low pre-sale estimate of £20,000 after a raging bidding war was won by a private collector bidding over the phone from overseas.

Back then, in February 1997, a copy of the book was sent to Fiona Waters, the children’s book critic, by Rosamund Walker, Marketing Manager of Bloomsbury Children’s Books.

In an accompanying letter, Walker wrote: “Dear Fiona, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by Joanne Rowling.

“I have attached a manuscript for your interest as promised…I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know your comments for offers ahead of publication.”

A month later, Waters replied, “I just loved this book. Something about Harry Potter reminds me of Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

Waters’ quote was used as a review on the back cover of the book’s first printed edition.

Clive Moss, Head of Books, Manuscripts and Works on Paper, Chiswick Auctions, said: “We are delighted with the result of this only known surviving set of flag leaves, which were presented for the first time today and caused quite a stir.

“We expected strong competition for them as they offered a unique insight into what would become an iconic work in literary history.”
