Idris Elba plays the title character John Luther, a police officer who plays by his own rules. The television series first aired in 2010, and the final episode of the fifth season aired in 2019. Luther has had five seasons so far, and Luther: The Fallen Sun, a 2023 feature film, is the latest installment.

Fans of the psychological crime series have been on the edge of their seats since 2019, when the fifth series finale aired, putting Luther in a difficult position — to say the least.

Luther: The Fallen Sun opens in select theaters on Friday, February 24th and is available to stream on Netflix starting Friday, March 10th.

The film will see Idris Elba in his most iconic role alongside the addition of some serious talent. Award-winning stand up star Cyntia Erivo plays Odette Raine, a rival detective and Luther’s nemesis.

Meanwhile, Lord of the Rings king Andy Serkis stars as David Robey, a multimillionaire serial killer who uses technology to spy and gather information that he later uses to blackmail and manipulate people.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is a sequel

Luther: The Fallen Sun will follow on from the show’s 2019 series, making it more of a sequel than a prequel.

Although the show’s creators have said that you don’t need to have seen the TV series to enjoy the 2023 film.

The official plot reads as follows: “A vicious serial killer terrorizes London while the brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars. Tortured by his failure to catch the cyber psychopath who is now taunting him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.”

What happened at the end of season five?

The fifth season ended on a violent cliffhanger. The closing sequence pits Luther against Alice Morgan, his recurring love interest and criminal mastermind. After a tense exchange about life, love and their relationship at a construction site, Alice shoots him dead.

Wounded and in an attempt to save himself, Luther pushes Alice off the scaffolding but seemingly changes his mind and catches her by the wrist before she falls. However, Alice cuts herself free with a blade and falls to her death.

Meanwhile, DSU Martin Schenk and the squad arrive at the scene and arrest John Luther.
