The East Harris County apartment fire was started by a 9-year-old left alone with a 1-year-old, investigators say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A 9-year-old left alone with an 11-year-old started a fire that damaged an apartment in east Harris County, investigators said Friday.

The incident at the Bayou Palms Apartments on the 13400 block of Woodforest Boulevard also hospitalized a 2-year-old in a unit above as a precaution, the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office said.

Firefighters did not say if the two unattended children were injured.

The fire marshal’s office sent the facts of the incident to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, which denied any charges.

It is not immediately known where the adults responsible were at the time, or how long the children were left alone.

The youth welfare office was informed and the children referred to the responsible authority HCFMO youth fire brigade intervention program.

According to the firefighter’s website, the program is designed to “provide education and intervention for children who have abused fire,” with the aim of preventing fires, injuries, deaths and the destruction of property.
