The doctor reveals the three most important practices to stay healthy in winter

The fall and winter seasons are just around the corner – and many people want to be sure they stay healthy as the seasons change.

The key to strong immunity often lies in a combination of smart and healthy practices this time of year

Dr. Nayan Patel of Auro Wellness in California spoke to Fox News Digital about his top three tips for staying healthy as the weather gets cooler.

Patel’s No. 1 tip is to stay hydrated throughout the fall.

1. Give your skin a boost of moisture

The La Habra, California-based doctor recommended keeping the skin moisturized to prevent water loss and penetration of irritants.

When the air becomes much drier in the cooler months, “it’s important to hydrate the skin to keep it moist,” he said.

Patel says moisturizers can also create a protective barrier on the skin, acting as a shield against environmental aggressors in cold, harsh weather.

He also recommended making sure people get enough of a specific vitamin…

2. Make sure you get enough vitamin D

Patel said taking vitamin D hormone throughout the year is important to boost the immune system.

“It helps in multiple areas of your body, boosting the immune system, improving mental status, maintaining weight, regulating blood sugar levels” — and more, he said.

However, in cooler weather it can be difficult to absorb vitamin D from the sun.

“Exposing the skin to sunlight is the best and most cost-effective way to improve vitamin D levels,” he said – and advised taking sufficient nutritional supplements.

Patel said eating foods with vitamin D can also be helpful in the cooler months – foods like fatty fish, cinnamon and milk.

Then comes the need for more water…

3. Keep hydrating

Staying hydrated during the cooler months can be crucial to our health.

Patel told Fox News Digital that our body’s need for water is just as great in cooler weather as it is in the summer.

“Dry indoor air and cold temperatures can lead to increased fluid loss,” he said.

Additionally, he said excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption can quickly dehydrate people.

For this reason, it is also important to make sure to drink more water during cooler weather months when other beverages may be consumed more frequently.

According to the organization, Auro Wellness is a company that focuses on science-based formulas and wellness programs to overcome the negative effects of stress.

Dr. Patel founded Auro Wellness in 2011.

He is the author of “The Glutathione Revolution: Fight Disease, Slow Aging & Improve Energy,” which discusses the antioxidant’s interaction with the body’s detoxification system.
