A child actor who plays the young Prince Harry in the latest series The crown beat cancer when he was just 21 months old.
13-year-old Will Powell was diagnosed with leukemia as a baby and underwent 27 surgeries.
He was treated for blood cell cancer at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for years, supported by his father and mother Michelle.
In a new interview, Powell’s father Andy said, “He was a superstar at everything. Our little boy never complained.”
Powell’s mother spotted a casting call for the Netflix series’ season five for an actor to play Prince William, although his father thought he would be better suited for the role of Prince Harry.
“Will was asked to provide a self-tape first. He got to the last four, then two, and finally he had an interview with the casting director over Skype,” Andy said BBC. “The next day we got the message that he was successful.”
Andy said his family was “bursting with excitement” at the launch of The crown Season five, which released on Netflix in November.
For the past five years, Powell’s family and a team of volunteers have been collecting used Christmas trees, raising £52,000 for The Children’s Hospital Charity.
Andy stated: “It is very likely that without the unwavering determination and caring of the people at Sheffield Children’s, Will would not be here to enjoy this incredible life experience.”
“We as a family thank the team from the bottom of our hearts. They are such an incredible group of people,” he added.
Imelda Staunton plays Queen Elizabeth in the fifth season of the hit Netflix series, starring Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Jonny Lee Miller, Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki. All cast members are new to the series as they portray older versions of the royals portrayed in previous seasons.
The season’s 10 episodes focus on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, such as the decommissioning of the royal yacht, and heavily depicts the breakdown of the marriage between then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
Prince William begins attending Eton College in the season, and the two young princes regularly appear in family scenes, such as when Prince Charles and Princess Diana visit Italy with their children in the first episode.
