The creators of Moon Knight explain the shocking twist at the end of the fourth episode

The directors of moon knight have opened up about the shocking twist at the end of the fourth episode.
The Disney Plus Marvel adaptation, starring Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, stunned viewers on Wednesday (April 20) with a reveal that drastically changes the reality of the series.
The following are spoilers for the first four episodes of moon knight…
Towards the end of the fourth episode, Marc Spector (Isaac) is shot and killed. He then wakes up in a mental hospital – leaving viewers unsure if everything we’ve seen up to this point was a sham.
Adding to the confusion is the presence of several characters Marc had previously encountered throughout the series – shown here to be patients, doctors, or other people in the facility.
However, some fans have speculated that the hospital itself could be a distortion of reality inflicted on Marc by the gods.
Speak with Weekly entertainmentdirectors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead spoke at length about the episode.
“The ending of episode four is actually a gift from the script. It came about because we wanted to do the least expected and completely disorient the audience while remaining completely true to the character we built over four episodes,” said Moorhead.
“We have a general philosophy about scenes where we’re trying to unsettle or instill fear in people: slow is scary, fast is exciting. Obviously, what’s more exciting than being spooked?” said Benson.
“We talked about how this scene feels like it’s underwater, not just because he’s been sedated, but because the entire audience has just undergone a total worldview change of what this show is,” Moorhead added . “Why is there a strange Indiana Jones Fake film in the middle of Moon Knight?”

According to the couple, the series took direct inspiration from one of them moon knight Comics Top Editions: Issues one through 14 of the 2016 series by author Jeff Lemire and animator Greg Smallwood.

The comic saw Marc realize he was being held against his will by the ancient Egyptian gods in a false reality while the real New York City was in danger.
“When you tie it to the Lemire run, there are so many iconic individual panels in that run,” Benson said. “But there’s one sequence in particular where our hero tried to escape from a psychiatric facility. Finally he gets out. He jumps out, but turns out he was on a plane and is in free fall.
“Obviously that doesn’t happen on this show, but we really feel like what we did captures the spirit of that distilled image into something that’s not literal but has the same feel.”
New episodes of moon knight will be released on Disney Plus on Wednesdays.
